20 Dolphins Killed During First Slaughter of 2016 in Taiji

The bloody dolphin hunting season in has begun again in Taiji, Japan.

September 9 saw the first slaughter of the season, which lasts every year from September to March. An estimated 20 dolphins were killed after they attempted to escape their tormentors, who corralled them with speedboats into a cove made infamous by the Oscar winning documentary The Cove. The hunters have 1800 left in their killing quota for this season alone.

Activist groups on the ground continue to document what has widely been denounced as a cruel and inhumane practice. Nationalist opposition from Japan has a presence in Taiji this year as in years past, as hunt supporters  attempt to interfere with activists reporting on the atrocities.

The dolphins’ bodies will be sold for meat that is increasingly unpopular in the country. The global captivity industry continues to drive demand for hunted dolphins. While a dead dolphin brings in about $600.00 USD, a live trained one can be hundreds of thousands. Putting pressure on places like SeaWorld to stop buying and displaying dolphins is as important now as ever.
