Animals Are Our Neighbors and Companions

In Defense of Animals’ Justice for Animals Campaign- has begun a series of presentations to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Delta. The first presentation, on June 22nd, reached 60 boys and girls attending the Boys and Girls Club of Lexington, Mississippi.

The presentation to the children included information on caring for their animal companions, learning about individuals of various species who share our environment, and the wider variety of animals in our world. The Issue of captivity was discussed regarding animals exploited in circuses, zoos, and entertainment facilities. Also emphasized was the vital need for understanding the animals living near our homes and in forests, waters, and environments humans encroach in.

Bullying was an issue that was pertinent to these children.  Everyone raised their hands when asked if they knew bullies. There’s much work to be done in this area, as bullying hurts the children themselves, and also affects the animals they live with. Sadly, despite the knowledge that bullying should be reported to an adult, teacher, or other person of authority in a given circumstance, most of the children quickly said their mothers had told them that if they were pushed to push back, if hit to hit back.

IDA-JAC recognizes that along with the mission of influencing legislators to vote ethically and humanely the generation that will forge our future must understand and embrace compassion and understanding if we are to transform into a humane and caring culture.
