The BLM is reporting that a mare was found dead over the weekend in the holding pens at the Fallon facility. The veterinarian is attributing the death of the horse, who was from the Black Rock East HMA to “dietary feed change.”

Meanwhile weather grounded the capture helicopter on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Calico capture stats as of Monday: 547 gathered, 518 shipped to Fallon, 24 at gather corrals, 4 deaths, 1 escaped back to freedom.

UPDATE FROM BLM

Tuesday,
Jan. 12, 2010
Begin gathering at the Warm Springs HMA. The contractor gathered 99 horses (43 studs, 35 mares, 21 weanlings/foals) today before windy conditions shut down operations in the early afternoon. No animals were shipped to Fallon today.

Totals: 646 gathered, 519 transferred to Fallon, 123 at gather corrals, 4 deaths, 1 back to HMA

    My husband and I are currently working on a 501 (c)(3)non-profit, as well as using a new pledge offering for endeavors such as this called “Kick-Start”. Look for our dream, we currently have 4 mustangs, one rescued from a starving situations, one from a rescue in Salt Lake City, the last two from BLM, in fact just got word we were approved for this last one two days ago. There are currently more than 30,000 in captivity & it’s obvious the BLM have no intention of stopping based on the heavy lobbying by the Beef Lobbying. The current adoption rates of the mustang rates are only about 400 to 500 per year. My husband and I are hoping to give as many of them as we can a good home, with lots of land, good food, good vet care, but we need funds to do it. We are hoping to apply for a grant. We currently have ten acres in Arizona, close to Heber, but we plan on buying more land which is similar to what they have been living on. We are just starting, so look for “Fulfilling a Dream, Equine Rescue”, which should be up and running by this summer. I become so emotional everytime I see the captures that Mrs Pickens shows via her website or on youtube. It’s tragic, all I can offer is love, food and comfort to these animals, similar to what she wants to do, but on a much smaller scale.
    Thanks

    Let me know if you’ve seen ONE horse that looks underfed,undernourished, etc., because I haven’t seen one. No matter what BLM says. I used to go to the Blue Diamond area (outside of Las Vegas) once a month, and the small herd in the park were extremely healthy. Now they’re gone….BLM said the area couldn’t sustain them. If Madeline Pickens with her good ideas and money to make her ideas happen can’t make a difference, shows me the BLM snubs their nose at any alternative means to care for these treasures of the West.

    This is an outrage! More importantly this is animal cruelty. There is no logical reason why this should be continuing. We have petitioned. We have flooded offices with email, regular mail and phone calls and still nothing is done to stop this. Now it’s time to hit them where it hurts. This is an election year. Let’s make sure if OUR politicians won’t do the job we’ve elected them to do, then let’s find a canidate who will! If they want to ignore then find someone who won’t! And, by GOD, make sure they know we know the truth. This is animal ABUSE and the last time I checked it was a felony.

    Stop killing our horses. NOW!

    Can’t there be some way of controlling the population? Could they geld the stallions and let them go? It may not be an instant decline but it would be eventually. The only thing they would have to try and do is, gather the young bachelors and geld them too. The ones who are born after the initial gelding. What a bunch of A-HOLES. What kind of morons particitpate in this roundup? Money grubbing bastards!

    I AGREE, THE BLM IS USING THE EXCUSE THAT THE LAND CAN ONLY SUPPORT AN ALLOATED AMOUNT OF HORSES BECAUSE THE CATTLE DESTROY THE RANGE. IF THEY WOULD REMOVE THE CATTLE THEN MAYBE THE RANGE WOULD DO BETTER.
    AS WITH THE GOVERNMENT IT IS ONLY ABOUT THE MONEY AND HE WITH THE MOST MONEY WINS AND THE REST LOSE.THEY WILL REDUCE THE HERDS TO THE POINT OF DESTRUCTION DUE TO INBREEDING AND WEAKEN THE HORSES LEFT, JUST LIKE THE PROBLEMS WITH SOME PURE BREED DOGS.

    As a temporary resient of Idaho, I am so pleased to see people creating a grass-roots movement to keep wild horses on Federal lands. Madeline Pickens has done a great job putting words to the cause, but I think everyday people, by our sheer volume and enthusiasm, can stop the wild horses from being destroyed.

    Obama has failed democrats so far, but that doesn’t mean we should abandon all hope and vote for someone who is less likely to help. In places like Idaho, we have no voice, or at best, we get a wolf in sheeps clothing- Walt Minnick.

    Please let my political voice be heard through your renewed effort in democratic or independent grass roots activism. Please offer the horse killers of Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Texas, etc. a chance to see the light through their limited myopic set of experiences.

    If we can do it for animals in Africa, then maybe there is hope.

    Tell everyone about what is happening because NO ONE who can effect change here will listen.

    When we want to adopt a wild horse we are required to have a certain size area, shelter from the elements….. so why is it that the BLM has no such requirements. At Fallon there are no wind flaps, no cover (shelter.) Horese in the wild go under trees, close to rocks and move around to keep warm. These horses have no such options. They have removed all the foal from their mothers, so their is no body warmth to share. This is animal cruelty!! Michael Vick went to prison for killing animals. (and he should have) Why are the BLM employes not held to the same standards. The powers that be need to take all this information back to the judge, maybe this time he will get the message. Let him know that the BLM admitted the horses were not staving , but they were taking them just in case they were at a later time (see Madeline Pickens article). Maybe the new Senator Tom Brown should be informed of the scandalous behavior of the BLM. He seems to listen. We just need to find that one person with power to stop this maddness and to stand up for our beloved horses. Somehow all the animals shared space with no problems for hundreds of years.

      CROSSPOST! this is from The Cloud Foundation Website !

      The DOI and BLM responded that at the just constructed Fallon facility “weather is not that extreme to require wind breaks for healthy horses. . . they do not require protection from the elements to maintain good health. . . .there is nothing to be concerned about from an animal well-being standpoint.” Thus, no actions to protect the captured horses have taken place, not even for foals or sick horses…

      my comment: every critter on earth requires some type of shelter from the elements; even the hefty Artic Walrus takes refuge in the water and then on icebergs;

      not even the Mighty Native American Buffalo can survive without finding refuge from extreme weather;

      Wild Horses take refuge in Woods; Forests; esp. Cliffs and rocks; such as the Wild Burros do;

      sure footed and healthy; they belong in the wild!

      Can you imagine how terrible the Foals must feel; when the BLM (Bureau of Land Management)”strides up to the foals and shoos them and even “whips them; with flags; to spook them; and then “literally forces the Foals; Weanlings and Colts into single pens; away from their beloved Mothers; and they must call out to their mothers; and the Mares must hear the colts calling;:(and my other point: When the BLM tragically “puts the Foals in one pen and the Mares in another; instead of putting the Foals w/ their mare

      the Mares who are laden with milk; must go through terrible agony; not having the little one nursing on them; I understand for a female mammel to have milk; but no foal to nurse; is very painful when milk dries up; they have a name for this condition; cannot recall

These horses are being stressed to the max, made worse with the bad weather. I have heard that the 1st old horse had offers of a home as did the foal but the BLM keeps saying no. I think the pipeline is the cause of the gather that must be done right now and I do not understand why it cannot be done with the horses out there. Please everyone, keep up the fight, contact everyone, we must get through and force the BLM to stop this nonsense.

From everything I have read the wild animals have first priority to grazing lands. It is true I am sure in some areas that the populations should be thinned but not in the dead of winter and never by helicopter, that is insane and any ranhcher should know that! The Ruby Pipeline should not be the cause of the roundup in Montana. We need this whole thing to come before the courts. How can they possibly but with in the law and guidelines of the Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971?

If we begin to document all the wild ones this year and keep at this we can create a National Wild Horse Data Base and know more about the horses than BLM does. It would take work and commitment. Look at how long you have been fighting, take it further. Start to protect the wild ones from future roundups. Name them, photograph them and keep track of them. We set up our whole farm soley for that purpose and it has been the most wonderful experience of my entire life working with these horses. My children and grandchildren… will always have the spirit of the wild horse in their lives, and there will always be free roaming horses in this country. The problem is the back yard domestic breeders we have in this country flooding the market with junk horses leaving no room on our farms for these horses which are natures perfection. The San Francisco protesters brought a “mini” to the protest! (Rediculous act of human intervention in breeding!) If every horse person would go right now and adopt a mustang there would be none in holding and the remaining horses on the range could survive under management. I have no respect for anyone’s opinion who doesn’t have a mustang in their barn. Have you ever been to a holding facility or an adoption or talked to the dedicated “horse people” that have given their lives to the preservation and well being of “our” horses? And, of course, removing 90% of the horse population in an area is obviously not a response to horse overpopulation, but rather, is a replacement operation.

      Nincy,

      I totally agree with your statement. If they really just want to control the herd, they would round them up and practice birth control management, and then release them, but the would be too humane!

    I find it very disturbing that a “pipeline” would cause these idiots to do these barbaric round ups. Why can’t the innocent animals just be left alone regardless if
    there is a pipeline or not? What difference does it make if the horses are on this land?
    The round ups are because of the greedy, dishonest cattle ranchers.

    And guess what? Ken Salazar, who is overseeing all of this, is a CATTLE RANCHER! Where is Obama in all of this? Where is this new president who promised “Change”?

    This is worse than Bush. Much worse.

    It’s my understanding, from the Cloud Foundation, that a natural gas pipeline that is to be built through the Calico complex, may be the real reason for the roundup. Is this true? If so, the government has been totally deceptive to the American people about its reasons for rounding up 90% of the Calico horses.

    just keeping a personal record; so from what I understand; four horses have “perished; either directly at the hands of the BLM; or indirectly by the BLM”s roundup; these four horses are; i.m.o.;

    1. the foal being chased by the helicopter who collapsed on the cold icey snow from exhaustion(died)

    2. The Mother of the Lil’ foal Trooper; who was “blatantly shot and killed; not only in front of the entire herd; but in front of her Foal himself !

    3. A 2nd Mare was “shot and killed by the BLM; due to “poor body condition (what a lame excuse…)

    4. and now a fourth horse “was found dead in her pen!;

    “3 out of 4 ain’t bad but four dead horses is a NO NO!

    The BLM continues to blatantly disregard The Wild Horse and Burro Act, 1971. Where are our government officials?
    Ken Salazar, Bob Abbey, Don Glenn have all deceived the American public. There is only one result with Ken Salazar, OUR WILD HORSES AND BURROS suffering, being destroyed and a loss of our heritage.
    Many, many deaths and injuries at the hands of our inhumane BLM. I agree with Carrie…..A NATIONAL DISGRACE.

      Lets go shut them down before the next round-up. Enough of us “in the way” might get more media attention than signing petitions! I am serious, anyone interested contact me please.

      I agree whole hardly. What I don’t understand, why can’t we all get together and have a telethone to raise money to buy a huge parcel of land, and put all of the wild horses on it to keep them safe. They just raised 57 million for the the haiti earthquake victims, lets try to get some of the big Stars to get together and promote this!!!! Thanks to everyone who still care about our wild life.

        I agree!!! This whole Haiti thing is horrible!!! The USA and it’s people have sent over so much money, which is really nice to do, but we need to take care of “our own” first, and THEN we can take care of others when ALL HERE IS FINE!!! All the fund-raising for Haiti has made me literally sick, and I am ashamed to say I live in the same country as so many others with twisted mindsets!!!

      that is it. Look how the Country, our country, got money together for Haiti. Lots and lots of money and aide. Good…but wait a minute. what about all the children starving here, right here in our America???
      There are plenty…thousands, more…what about our
      animals?? Celebrities,all wealthy people (our country
      has many) should help just like they helped for Haiti.
      Our horses need help..not slaughter..So much money is
      given to sports players,movie stars,actors, actresses,
      singers, too much money. If they put some to great
      causes it would make them richer in heart and mind.
      I only wish I were rich. I have charities I donate to. The animals depend on us for everything except their happiness. But they can’t give that to themselves unless we help…Please help….
