Australian Ad Promotes Violence Against Vegans

Sign Our Alert to Advertising Bureau Which Ruled the Ad: “Humorous”!

Every year, Meat and Livestock Australia launches a controversial advertising campaign encouraging people to eat more lamb flesh on Australia Day. Previous ads have taken aim at those who don’t eat slaughtered baby lambs by calling them “soap-avoiding,” “pot-smoking,” and “un-Australian.” This year, Meat and Livestock Australia has sunk to a new low, with a scene in which a vegan man’s apartment is blowtorched after he protests, “But I’m vegan now.”

The meat industry is clearly feeling threatened, but promoting violence toward animals and humans is not the answer and should not be tolerated.

In addition to promoting violence toward animals and humans, the ad is incredibly disrespectful toward indigenous Australians. Their word “boomerang” is appropriated in order to promote a day that celebrates when indigenous Australians were dispossessed, colonized and massacred by European settlers.

The ad cost Meat and Livestock Australia $1.2 million dollars to create, and unless it’s pulled or cut by the Advertising Standards Bureau, it will continue to air up until January 26.
