Australian Government Continues to Defend Feral Cat Massacre

Over the past few months, we’ve been following the Australian government’s plan to systematically kill 2 million feral cats over the next five years. The plan is to brutally kill these feral cats with poisons, traps, guns, and tracker dogs, and even poisoned microchips implanted into prey animals! The killings are being justified under the guise of protecting native species. The killing campaign, lead by Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt, mistakenly blames feral cats rather than human population growth and the corresponding expansion of ensuing human activities for declining populations of certain native species.

After worldwide outrage and overwhelming opposition to the plan, Australia’s commissioner for threatened animals has responded with open letters to French actress Brigitte Bardot and The Smiths singer Morrissey, defending the brutal plan.

Ms. Bardot is one of the most vocal opponents to the killing plan. She wrote to the Australian government, saying, “This animal genocide is inhumane and ridiculous. In addition to being cruel, killing these cats is absolutely useless since the rest of them will keep breeding.” She continued, “Your country is sullied by the blood of millions of innocent animals so please, don’t add cats to this morbid record.”

You can help these vulnerable felines and stand with Ms. Bardot and Morrissey by opposing Australia’s mass killing initiative before it’s too late. Please tell the Australian government to rethink its position and to implement smarter, more humane solutions for controlling the feral cat population. If you have not already signed our alert asking the Australian government to halt its plans to exterminate 2 million feral cats, please do so here.
