Baby Sea Turtles Desperately Need Your Help!

The sea turtle population all over Central America has declined to devastatingly low numbers. Although sea turtles are protected under Salvadoran law, the Ministry of Natural Resources does not even attempt to enforce turtle protection. Thousands of baby turtles are stolen from their nests, and adults are massacred for their flesh. It’s time to stop this madness!

Excessive turtle egg collection is common on all beaches in El Salvador. Even the Ministry of El Salvador knows how the turtle eggs are transported to the black market. Almost all of the eggs are taken from their nests, with only a small percentage sent to hatcheries for conservation efforts. Adult turtles also face a terrible fate – they are slaughtered for consumption in restaurants.

Tragically, Carapacho Turtle Hatchery found that working with the authorities led to substantial harassment and scores of related problems. Very low numbers of turtles are returning to the beaches to lay their eggs, yet every night, two or three nests are robbed. Last week, two adult turtles were loaded on a bicycle and transported away for slaughter. Last year, all of the turtle eggs were stolen and sold on the black market. This is a travesty!

We must act now before there are no turtles left. Join us to support the work of animal activists at Carapacho Turtle Hatchery. They need your voice now to pressure the Ministry of Natural Resources to do its job to protect the sea turtles!
