The proposed Liberty Canyon Wildlife Crossing will be the first of its size and scale near an urban area, providing safe passage across one of the busiest highways in the region. A formidable eight-lane highway means that few animals survive the journey across it in search of new territory and mates. Large predators, like mountain lions, remain landlocked in the Santa Monica Mountains. Without access to more territory and more potential mates, these mountain lions suffer from inbreeding and territorial fighting. The crossing will allow mountain lions and other large species who need more room to survive and thrive to travel between the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills and access the Sierra Madre Mountain Range.

This project is a huge collaborative effort between many agencies and organizations including Caltrans, the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, the National Park Service, and the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains. Alternative 3 of the project features a 165-foot wide x 200-foot long bridge and extension over Agoura Road, with plants and soundwalls to block noise and light. IDA attended the Public Scoping Meeting and encourages our supporters to send public comments.
