Camel Milk? This Madness Has Got to Stop!

Camel Milk? This Madness Has Got to Stop!

We’re not joking. Camel milk farms are now popping up in Australia, and it’s already on the shelves.

But why? A driving reason behind camel milk's recent spike in popularity is its unsubstantiated health claims, especially from companies with a vested interest in selling it.

Recently, Camel Milk Victoria was the recipient of a CHOICE Shonky Award (an “award” ceremony in Australia which names and shames companies that take advantage of consumers) after the company made claims on its website that camel milk was known to help "improve the immune system by fighting off bacteria and infections and aid those who have autism, diabetes, tuberculosis, cancer, stomach ulcers and more."

Soon after receiving this “award,” and being reported to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for investigation, Camel Milk Victoria quietly removed all health claims from its website, and has not responded to multiple requests for comment.

Just like cows, and all mammals, camels can only produce milk after they are impregnated and give birth. Can we, for once, think of their desire to nurse their babies, and their desire to live fairly natural lives? We know beyond doubt that animals such as camels have emotions, can suffer, can know happiness, and have wants and fears. Is it too much to ask that we attempt to honor those and be compassionate?

The last thing the world needs is another poor animal species to become part of the latest diet fad and suffer as a result of being a mass produced commodity.

With so many alternatives on the market like almond milk, coconut-yogurt, and nut-based cheeses, it’s now easier than ever to begin a cruelty-free lifestyle. Download our free Veg Starter Guide for helpful tips and delicious meal ideas.
