Hope Animal Sanctuary

Hope Animal Sanctuary home

Hope Animal Sanctuary has provided refuge for abused animals in rural Mississippi since 1993.

In a region devoid of animal shelters and other vital animal control services, the ongoing work of the sanctuary is critical in providing hope for animals suffering in America’s Deep South.

In Defense of Animals' Hope Animal Sanctuary has saved thousands of animals over the years, including dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, horses, cows, and chickens.

What Is Hope Animal Sanctuary?

Located in rural Grenada, Mississippi, Hope Animal Sanctuary was established by In Defense of Animals to provide a unique refuge for many animals who have been victims of abuse and neglect. We have helped thousands get a second chance at finding forever homes.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to rebuild in 2018, which helped us revolutionize the way we shelter animals here and increase our capacity.

Our sanctuary isn’t a typical setup. The main building houses state-of-the-art veterinary rooms and serves as a welcome and education center for visitors. It is surrounded by a neighborhood of 20 tiny houses.

Nineteen of those houses are for dogs who get to live in small groups with each other, instead of being kenneled alone. Each house is temperature-controlled and comes complete with its own grass-filled yard for them to play in and a shaded porch, which is perfect for lounging.

One of the houses is dedicated to cats and has a secure enclosure so they can also enjoy time outside.

All of the animals here receive outstanding veterinary care and are spayed or neutered, while our dedicated staff of caregivers provides them with love and gets them ready for adoption.

Every year, we assist with the rescue and placement of more than 500 animal companions, many of whom are transported to rescue partners in the North to states including Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

While that keeps us busy, we’ve also been able to assist many other animals in need, including wild, exotic, and farmed animals, and provide a permanent home for others requiring specialized care, including three horses and ten dogs.

How We Help

Justice

Hope Animal Sanctuary works in partnership with our Justice for Animals campaign to conduct investigations and coordinate rescues to seize abused animals with local law enforcement. We rescue animals suffering from starvation, disease, violent abuse, and extreme neglect, and have also saved exotic and farmed animals, and intervened to help even more animals in puppy mills, kept by “collectors,” animal dealers, and dogfighting rings.

Hope

Hope Animal Sanctuary facilitates the adoptions of hundreds of animals each year, working with several rescue partners to place more than 500 dogs and cats each year in wonderful forever homes. And for those too traumatized by their past lives, they have a home for life at the sanctuary.
