Habitats for Wild Animals

Wild and Free home

Cruel treatment and killing of animals in the wild and in urban areas, and the accelerating rate of habitat encroachment and loss is of great concern to In Defense Animals.

Every year, over a million of wild individual are cruelly killed through USDA’s Wildlife Services (WS) ‘predator control program. McClatchy DC has reported that, “Since 2000, its employees have killed nearly a million coyotes, mostly in the West. They have destroyed millions of birds, from nonnative starlings to migratory shorebirds, along with a colorful menagerie of more than 300 other species, including black bears, beavers, porcupines, river otters, mountain lions and wolves.”

Hundreds of thousands more of these animals are injured and killed through state wildlife agencies administered hunting, trapping and fishing programs for recreation, and by sport and trophy hunters, who pursue and kill wild animals with the most brutal and sometimes primitive equipment such as archery, muzzleloaders, shotguns and rifles.

Conservation of wild animals, with its long history of hunting at the foundation of its policies, is clearly failing evidenced by the accelerating rate of species extinction, while the human population continues to explode. We can no longer accept or tolerate that human activities cause so much suffering among other, innocent nonhuman beings. As wild animals continue to lose ground on an increasingly human-dominated planet, it is imperative that we employ existing humane, nonlethal methods, based on respect, compassion and empathy for other beings, and consider our impact on animals and habitats when deciding on expanding our families. In Defense of Animals is committed to adding a forceful voice for animal rights to those of the conservation and environmental movement, to help end the suffering of individual animals in the wild and in urban areas, and to let them be in their own homes, their natural habitat.

Our wild animals and habitats campaign combats the ongoing loss of habitat and freedom for all wild animals, and our anti-hunting campaign works to end animal destruction through governmental hunting and trapping programs, and hunting clubs. We also highlight the role we all have to play in balancing human and animal populations and stopping. We also work to end of the persecution of animals being pushed out of their homes, such as urban deer and Canada geese through lethal methods.
