Brewster – Arabian stallion - 19 years old

Brewster came to IDA through a call from a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Animal Cruelty Investigator. An elderly woman suffering from the onset of Alzheimer’s disease had recently lost her husband and could not care for Brewster. He had grown quite thin and developed laminitis, a very painful disease which causes inflamation and weakness in the hoof and can lead to the coffin bone rotating down through the sole. Laminitis must be treated with veterinary care, proper diet and correct shoeing. We took Brewster into our care but the laminitis had progressed to the point he could never be ridden again. Being an older stallion, neither could he be safely gelded. Brewster must stay with us where he can be cared for and loved for life. He lives with IDA’s super foster mom and dad, Tammi Wickett and Steven Hansen, who have built Brewster his own special stallion stall and paddock so he can live near the other horses without being accidentally injured. Chance – American Saddlebred gelding – 9 years old

When Chance was found by an Arizona SPCA cruelty investigator, he was near death in a small pen with no food or water in the Arizona desert. Chance was down on the ground, severely emaciated and dehydrated, and lame in his left hip from an unknown injury. He was rehabilitated by the AZ SPCA and then adopted by a woman who ultimately did not have the financial resources to properly care for Chance. IDA therefore accepted responsibility for Chance’s well being. Chance cannot go just anywhere because he is very protective of his food and territory. Given his history, this is certainly understandable. Fortunately, Chance is happy living with Tammi and Stephen at his new IDA foster home. Chance has been kicked around a lot in his young life, but your sponsorship will help ensure that he is able to remain under IDA’s care in a place where he can finally be happy and safe.

Romancing Betty – Thoroughbred mare – 17 years old

Romancing Betty started her career as a race horse but her truly spectacular beauty and exquisite grace caught the eye of competitive jumpers, and she excelled in this for a number of years, winning many a ribbon. Betty’s family loved her very much, so when her guardian developed brain cancer, they asked IDA to take care of her because they never wanted anything bad to happen to this beautiful flea-bitten gray mare. Romancing Betty needs special shoes to keep her at her healthiest and may, at some point, be adoptable, but she is not for the inexperienced horseperson. She has been returned to IDA from adoptions by people who just felt they could not keep her. At this time, Betty is waiting for a place in a very good sanctuary in Chino Valley that is one of our coalition members. Until then, your sponsorship will allow IDA to give Betty all the care and love this exquisite and wonderful horse deserves.

Domingo, 19 year old Peruvian Gelding - Domingo was diagnosed with severe DSLD, a deterioration of the main suspensory ligaments of the lower legs. He has stabilized nicely, but needs some special care and can not be ridden.

Tango, 9 year old stallion, Peruvian Paso - Tango also has DSLD and has pain from time to time, but he is usually quite comfortable. Since gelding him would require a week of lunging to keep the swelling down, we are keeping him as a stallion. His manners are wonderful and he could be adopted if someone wanted to take on the responsibility. As DSLD is an inherited condition, he should NOT be bred.

Max, 19 year old Thoroughbred Gelding - Max won over $28,000 on the track and then went on to a second career as a jumper. When he developed Wobblers Syndrome he was given to IDA to live out his life comfortably. Wobblers is an arthritic condition that causes narrowing of the spinal canal and leads to ataxia, stumbling and falling. He would be a great companion, but should not be ridden.

Treylena, 4 year old Quarter Horse Gelding - Treylena is royalty of the Quarter Horse world. He was bred to be a reining horse but was tragically injured when he was just a colt and can not be ridden. He was raised in a very loving home and is quite the pet. His owner has requested that he stay with IDA and not be adopted out.

Corky is a 4 year old BLM Mustang. He has been with IDA since the fall of 2005. After some training, he will be adoptable.

Murphy is a two and a half year old little colt whose growth was stunted by the lack of nutrition. He was purchased at auction at 6 weeks of age, already weaned from his mother and very thin. IDA gave him the milk replacer and proper nutrition to save his life. He is looking for his forever home.

Hope, 4 year old mare - Hope is a "Bar N" mare that is quite healthy and ready to be adopted! She is broke to ride and healthy. She came to us newly weaned from her baby last summer. Hope was emaciated and dehydrated but has recovered beautifully!
