Korean Government Seeks to Legalize Dog Meat
We are sad to report that on March 9, 2005 the Korean Government announced it is once again planning to sanction dog meat by creating a “dog meat hygienic control” policy. While the Government promised in February that it was backing away from this deplorable plan after being inundated with thousands of letters, phone calls, and e-mails, we have just received word that the Government is again leaning toward supporting the Ministry of the Office for Government Policy Coordination's back door efforts to legalize dog meat.
As our colleagues with Animal Freedom Korea have indicated, "Whether or not the Office officially legalizes it, by managing and inspecting dog meat, the Government is essentially permitting it." Hygienically controlling dog meat is nothing more than a euphemism for legalizing it. If this proposal succeeds, millions of dogs will continue to suffer, but now with the Government's watchful approval.
If the Government genuinely wants to eradicate the potentially harmful effects of dog meat to public health, it should enforce its laws banning dog meat; not legalize it.
Please contact Korean Officials to urge them to immediately withdraw the policy to hygienically control and thus legalize dog meat. Tell them to enforce existing animal protection laws. Click here to send a prewritten letter online: http://ga0.org/campaign/koreandogs.
