Dear Editor,

In Jason Gewirtz’s article ("Boulder Mulls Pet Issue," June 7) attributed a statement to Carl Friedman that is factually incorrect. Under the proposed change in San Francisco, the new category of "guardian" will encompass the same legal rights, responsibilities and liabilities as an "owner." A guardian, however, refers specifically to someone who adopts or rescues a companion animal instead of purchasing a commodity. I have personally spoken to Mr. Friedman and he has assured me that this is the case. Richard Schulke, the Chairperson of San Francisco’s Commission of Animal Care and Welfare, also personally told me that there would be no legal difference between the two categories. In fact, the City Attorney specifically drafted the language so that the rights, responsibilities and liabilities of "owners" and "guardians" would be synonymous.

This is a very important fact to correct because the same principles would hold true in Boulder. Adding the category of "guardian" to Boulder’s Municipal Code does not take away or diminish the rights, responsibilities or liabilities of people who are referred to as "owners." Instead, this new language recognizes people who view and treat companion animals as individuals, not things or commodities. The change is intended to plant the seeds of respect and compassion in people so that companion animals can become a more complete part of our social ethic.

The city of Boulder has a tremendous opportunity to be at the forefront of social progress by adding the status of "guardian" to its municipal code. It is not intended to diminish or take away any rights. The new language is intended to recognize and respect the special relationship that people have with companion animals. This change is intended to, and does, benefit everyone in the community, human and non-human alike.

Sincerely,
