Pet store victimizes dogs at shelters (Published Wednesday, February 23, 2005 11:14:35 AM CST) Editor, the Gazette: Now that Janesville has a Petland, two words come to mind: Puppy mills. The store claims it doesn't buy from mills. But statically, if it isn't buying from a mill, its broker is. I bought a Rockford Petland puppy six years ago. By 2 years she had almost all her teeth removed because they were rotten. This cost me five times what she cost. Then, at 6 years, she had a fatty tumor removed for $3,000. People shouldn't be naive when it comes to what pet stores really sell. The pups live on grated flooring so their paws never touch flat ground. The cages, though clean, are far too small. I thought Wisconsin had a law against selling puppies and kittens in stores. Looks like I was wrong. But with enough support, we could make it happen. Write your lawmakers and tell them we don't want this in our state. The real victims are shelter dogs that will be overlooked. In the United States alone, an estimated 8 million to 12 million dogs and cats are surrendered every year and 4 million to 6 million must be destroyed. Most are under 18 months, and 90 percent are healthy and adoptable. Purebreds also come with serious health defects, and sadly, millions of deserving animals languish in shelters. About 25 percent of animals euthanized are purebreds. Let's do something. Write letters or pass petitions that this state won't accept animal suffering and support your local shelter.
