Mike Gochnaue
The copies of inspection reports for Mr. Gochnauer once again demonstrate gross mismanagement by AC officials. The facility was licensed on or around October 1995 and there have been 14 inspections since licensure. This is another facility that I have personally visited with media interest on three occasions. In spite of the media attention including graphic news footage USDA has failed to enforce Animal Welfare regulations at this kennel. From the county road, dogs with what appeared to be a severe case of mange could be seen in pens just a few feet away. In fact a news crew purchased a puppy from Mr. Gochnauer that I still have in my possession that did require treatment for mange. The inspector even gave a 3 month correction deadline for "…a large pool of standing liquid manure and urine…" even though such conditions can be corrected in a days time with the proper equipment. Two re-inspections were conducted prior to the expiration of the correction deadline one of which was just 2 weeks before the deadline. A few months later the kennel was re-inspected and the problem allegedly corrected. During my last visit to the facility Mr. Gochnauer fired a shotgun at a news crew and myself just missing us. A trial is pending although it has been postponed several times the last of which was due to Mr. Gochnauer’s ill health. The property looks like a junkyard and one neighbor stated that the place has looked pretty much the same for several years. From the looks of the property as well as the inspection reports the facility should never have passed an initial pre-license inspection. The inspector has documented numerous non-compliant items, however, it appears that he has cleverly documented the inspection report to conceal actual conditions. The frequency and number of non-compliant items should have prompted supervisory AC officials, all veterinarians, to send a Veterinary Medical Officer (VMO) to access the conditions.
