Letter to Petland Owner
July 25, 2000
Janelle Inte, Owner
Petland
1845 28th Street
Boulder, CO 80303
Dear Mrs. Inte:
The Humane Society of Boulder Valley received another one of your puppies and a ferret this weekend. The dog's guardian surrendered this 3-month old Scottish-West Highland Terrier mix to the Society because she did not have her landlord's permission to purchase a dog. The ferret was surrendered for being destructive.
In the past two weeks, the Society has received 3 animals that originated from Petland in Boulder. Your business is having an impact on our over-crowded kennel space and our limited resources.
As you know, the Humane Society is a private, nonprofit organization and I am writing today to request a donation from you to help offset the cost of caring for this dog and ferret since you profited from the sale of these animals.
A donation of $200.00 will help cover the cost of feeding, sheltering, spaying and placing the dog into a responsible home. A donation of $50.00 will offset the our expenses for boarding the ferret until he can be transferred into a placement organization. Your donation of $250.00 will be fully tax-deductible. I am enclosing a return envelope for your convenience.
For nearly 100 years, the Humane Society was fought against pet-overpopulation in Boulder. Our dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to educate people on responsible pet guardianship, and the importance of spaying and neutering. We are concerned that a national new program recently revealed Petland as the largest wholesale buyer of animals mass-produced at puppy mills in deplorable, inhumane conditions. We are concerned about the cast inventory of animals you house. The complaints we received from concerned citizens, and the purebred ands mix-breed puppies sold that are not spayed or neutered before being released into our community. We have offered to work with you on animal care standards, creating a puppy spay/neuter program, providing staff training, or ideally offering only shelter animals at your store. Aside from hosting a brief presentation by our Community Outreach Coordinator, we are disappointed that you have not shown an interest in a cooperative effort to reduce the number of homeless animals in our community.
If you would like to discuss working with the Humane Society or if you would like information on the final disposition of this dog and ferret, please contact me a 303-442-4030, extension 658.
Sincerely,
Dori Villalon
