- Adopt animals from local animal care facilities, rescue groups and shelters instead of purchasing them from breeders or pet stores. Click here for a world-wide directory of animal shelters.
- Have your companions spayed or neutered.
- Boycott all pet stores that sell animals, including Petland, one of the nation's largest puppy and kitten sellers.
- Educate your community, friends and family about companion-animal overpopulation.
- Send a letter to the editor of your local paper telling people why you won't buy animals, or shop at pet stores that sell animals. Sample letter to the editor
- Contact IDA for brochures and flyers to distribute to your friends and family.
- Always represent yourself as a guardian, never an "owner" of an animal. Remember, animals are not commodities.
- Show your support of IDA's boycott of petland by placing a "Boycott Petland" banner on your web page. Banners and linking information is available by clicking here.
- Write or call the CEO of Petland. Tell him that you have joined IDA's boycott of Petland and will continue this boycott until they stop selling animals. Call the Petland toll-free consumer number often!
