Contact in your Community
We urge anyone who is concerned about pet theft to get actively involved in the fight to stop this crime by becoming a Citizen Contact with the IDA Stolen Pet Program. Being a Citizen Contact can take many forms, depending on your general knowledge, your level of motivation, and the time you have available. Don't be discouraged if you don't have a lot of knowledge about pet theft right now your willingness to learn is the key! The following are just a few examples of some of the things that the IDA Stolen Pet Program Citizen Contacts do:
- Distribute literature on pet theft in your community and/or set up a neighborhood watch to monitor any suspicious persons or vehicles;
- Tell others about our hotline number (1-800-STOLEN PET) and encourage them to call and report missing pets, or to receive information on how to prevent pet theft;
- Call people who have placed "free to good home" ads and warn them of the dangers. You can take it one step further by working with these people to track and identify possible "bunchers" or dealers who are involved in "free to a good home" acquisitions.
- Act as a support and/or resource for victims of pet theft. If you agree to be a resource for victims, IDA will occasionally refer victims from your state to you for guidance.
- Investigate the animal dealers and research facilities in your area.
- Research and/or track the incidence of pet theft in your area through records retained by your local humane societies, shelters, and police departments.
We hope you will join us in the nationwide fight against pet theft! If you would like to sign up as a Citizen Contact, please contact Gretchen Hersman. |

If we are to be successful, we must place ads, hold press conferences, organize additional protests and produce thousands of cards, posters, flyers and brochures. |
