Spay/Neuter Ordinances | Boycott Petland! | Posters for Animals | Animals for Adoption

Spay/Neuter Poster Day
On May 16, 2000, Mayor Richard Riordan of Los Angeles honored the children of Albion Elementary School for their artistic depictions of cats and dogs affected by pet overpopulation.Field Representative Bill Dyer of IDA organized this event, which showcased artwork created by 118 students, grades 2 through 5.

The originality of the artwork created by Albion’s students made it very difficult for the judges to choose winners. Judges included Linda Blair, Erika Brunson, President Earl Holliman of The Ark Trust Inc., Commissioner Kathy Riordan, President JoAnne Worley of Actors and Others for Animals, and Gretchen Wyler. After much deliberation however, the judges awarded first, second, third place, and honorary mentions. Mayor Riordan presented the winning children their awards, and observed the many fine pictures arrayed outside the Los Angeles Animal Shelter.

A few lucky students will have their artwork featured on billboards and posters throughout Los Angeles. Their art pieces will advertise the need to control pet populations by spay and neutering companion animals.

President Elliot M. Katz of IDA and General manager Dan Knapp of the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services also participated in the event. The Coalition to End Pet Overpopulation and The Coalition for Pet and Public Safety sponsored the contest and award ceremony.
