» CISCO AND HIS CHRISTMAS TREE
Cisco radiates fun and happiness as he hangs out by HIS Christmas tree. His fur is thick and glossy and he has a sense of self-importance. In March he’ll be ten, senior cat status and Cisco can only become stronger and happier.
I met Cisco in March of '01. Yes, he was one of my patients. His body was almost bald and covered with sores and scabs. Poor Cisco! Self inflicted mutilation (psychogenic dermatis or alopecia) was the reason his guardians contacted me. He'd been pulling, digging and biting at his skin since he was a year old. He had many vet visits, medications and various other treatments with no substantial success. His guardians were about to give up. I was perhaps their last hope.
During Cisco's session, I especially noticed how his two older female companions gave him the brush-off when he tried to engage them. It was when his expression and body language cried out in desperation for feline play that I knew what he needed.
1. His cure would be a playful kitten that preferred cats to people. A feral kitten would be the easiest solution. Such a kitten would instinctively ignore Cisco's guardians and reach out to Cisco. This would cut out rivalry for the guardians' attention. Later on the kitten would accept them. First things first!
2.My other recommendations included change of diet to a food rich in the omega fatty acids to aid his skin, coordinated with a vet visit for medication to ease his itching and
discomfort
3. I also instructed his guardians to continuously play the audio cassette of his session (which consisted of our discussion and low tension music with whale sounds) to reinforce the relaxation that he and his companions experienced during the session.
His guardians weren't thrilled about adopting another cat but agreed to consider it.
Two weeks later Cisco was less self abusive but still bothered. So a feral black kitten was introduced using my introduction. The kitten was dubbed Poncho. Within a week they were a duo, I explained to Cisco's guardians that his self-destruction was a symptom of his loneliness, insecurity and low self esteem. His destruction was a form of anxiety attack. He had some minor annoying symptoms that would slowly disappear as he became even more self-assured.
Cisco has certainly rallied. His guardians recently had a gala holiday party and it was Cisco who, despite the noise and festivity, who chose to hang out by the tree. Wouldn't you say such Cisco behavior calls for a celebration. May you and yours have a joyous and healthy holiday!

TINKLING IN PLANT Dear Carole Wilbourn, The
Cat Therapist,
I recently brought my houseplants in for the winter, including a large Ficus tree. My 8 months old neutered male cat started urinating in the plant. We purchased a plastic tray and cut a hole out for the trunk, so our cat no longer has access to the soil to dig in. But now he is urinating in the plastic tray. His litterbox is cleaned daily and he doesn't go anywhere else in the house except in his litterbox and the tree. Do you have any suggestions for how to stop him before he kills the tree?
Thank you.
Guardian Willis
Dear Guardian Willis:
You definitely have a nature-lover of a cat. He's attracted to the tray because it's part of the tree. The best option would be to place the tree out of his reach and sight. For now it has become part of his routine. If this isn't possible, you could make the tray uninviting by coating it with Tabasco Sauce and some tin foil. Simultaneously, provide him with a small pot of kitty grass and praise him when he grazes on it. You could try putting a token of potting soil in his litter box for a touch of earthly substance. May your Ficus live on happily!

CAT MOUNTS OTHER CATCarole,
We have two cats, a male and female, both fixed. The male cat continues to mount the female cat - it's the whole show, biting, crying, everything. Why would/does a male cat that's neutered do this?
Thanks in advance for the info.
Jenny
Dear Guardian Jenny:
A neutered male is still sensual so his energy can be channeled sexually. If your female doesn't want any part of his sexyness, distract him. However, she may protest a bit, part of being the provocative sex, but doesn't mind humoring her companion. My book,
THE TOTAL CAT, will give you more info. Click on to http://www.thecattherapist.com/cat_store.htm

» ANOTHER YEAR OF THANKS TO OUR CATS
With '06 on the way, let's take some time out to thank our cats
and other companion animals for their continuous and unjudgmental love. Such
giving confidantes! Aren't we lucky! I bet you can think of at least one gift or
chuckle that your cat/s give you for each letter of the alphabet. Why not sit
down with your cat/s and see. Next you can see if you are as generous. You can
also think of ways to add to this list.
I want to thank you all for your caring emails about your cats and for all of
you guys who entered my MEN AND THEIR CATS Contest. Click
here to have a look. There's still time to enter. I'd also love to know of
anything that you might like me to add to my column. The latest addition was FABULOUS
FELINES. May I wish you and your cats a very healthy and peaceful '06 from
myself and everyone at IDA.
» MY CAT WAKES ME UP
Hello,
My five year old cat sleeps in my bed from about 11:00 p.m. until a bout 4:30 or
5:00 a.m. When she wakes up, she wants me to wake up too. She scratches at the
bedding, or will jump on the dresser and knock things over until I get out of
bed. I have no choice but to put her out of the room and close the door. When I
do that, she’ll scratch at the door and yowl for hours. If I let her back in,
and get back into to bed, she starts up again with the scratching and knocking
things over. I play with her before bedtime, and she has plenty of food, water,
and clean litter. She had a routine check up at the vet about three months ago
and had a clean bill of health. What's going on with her? I can't take much more
of this sleep deprivation!
Thank you,
-Lisa
Dear Guardian Lisa:
When your cat gives you the 4:00 A.M. wake-up call, scoop her up and put her in
the bathroom with her litter box and other comforts. Tell her this can be her
private play-room and you'll see her in the morning. Be relaxed and light in
your manner so she feels this is a perk for her and not a punishment. She may
protest for a few nights but soon it will become her nocturnal security room.
Her wake-up behavior may be a reaction to your bio-rhythms at that time of the
morning. Perhaps you wake her up! Sleep tight!
