Chinese Millionaire Loses Dog, Begins Fight to Save China’s Dogs

When his own dog went missing, Wang Yan searched and searched, hoping to be reunited with his beloved companion. In the U.S., such a search would take us to various animal shelters. In China, Yan faced the horrifying reality that his dog may have been taken to be eaten. He went to the local slaughterhouse in search of his companion.

This search changed thousands of lives. While Yan never found his dog, the brutal scenes within the slaughterhouse made him determined to help all the dogs he could. He bought the slaughterhouse and shut it down, and also started his own animal rescue, saving roughly 2,000 dogs.

A once wealthy man, Yan has spent his millions, approximately 3 million yuan ($470,186), saving dogs, and now he is trying to build a home for a couple hundred of them. “I do not accept monetary donations,” states Yan, “I only hope that kind-hearted people will be able to donate a few supplies to help build a home for these 200 dogs.” We also hope Yan’s compassion inspires others within China to follow suit and call for an end to the horrific dog meat trade which claims millions of dogs each year, many beloved companions.
