Costco Egg Cruelty

Costco Egg Cruelty

Eight years after cage-free statement, Costco continues supporting cruelty

A recent HSUS investigation exposed hellish living conditions inside one of Costco’s egg supplier’s facilities. Costco stands as one of the world’s largest grocery retailers. In 2007, the retailer publicly stated its support for completely eliminating the use of cruel battery cages and expecting cage-free facilities from its suppliers. Now, in 2015, Costco continues to sell eggs from caged hens, despite its promise.

The video reveals cruelties inside Hillandale Farms, the same Pennsylvania factory farm responsible for the largest egg recall in U.S history.  Video footage reveals horrifying living conditions within Hallandale’s facility. Packed inside cages which restrict hens from performing natural behaviors including spreading their wings and self-cleaning, the egg-laying hens are forced to essentially live on top of one another. Live birds are shown standing on top of the mummified bodies of the deceased, animals which endured immense suffering from the facility’s appalling living conditions prior to their death. Furthermore, the birds are forced to eat, sleep, defecate and lay their eggs on top of the mummified corpses of other dead hens, promoting disease, and even more despair.

Made of wire, the facilities battery cages cut hens wings, legs and necks, with the HSUS’s investigation exposing birds trapped by their necks and limbs. Unable to free themselves or reach food, they starve in agony, some choking to death. Cracked and rotting eggs litter the facilities floor, along with dead and dying birds.
