"Dear Miss Sharon"

"Dear Miss Sharon"

Staff at In Defense of Animals’ Hope Animal Sanctuary were asked to help when a family’s dog had a litter of puppies. When we arrived at the home, we were met by a beautiful seven year old child named Lillie who was holding a puppy.

Her mother explained that the little girl really wanted to keep that puppy but they simply could not afford another dog. This seven year old child, wise beyond her years, understood that Mom was doing what was best for the puppy. As she handed the pup over to Sharon she said, “Miss Sharon, I wrote you a letter.”

Her mother had explained the situation to Lillie in such a way that she actually understood and accepted. She loved the pup she had named Chase and she truly wanted what was best for him. When her little friend from next door ran over to say goodbye to the pups, she asked “Will they be coming back?”

Lillie quickly explained that they would not be coming back but that Miss Sharon would find them all great homes. That is exactly what Miss Sharon and all of us at Hope Animal Sanctuary have planned for these puppies. We want to thank Lillie’s mom for the wonderful job she did helping Lillie understand that sometimes we have to let go of the ones we love so that they can have a better life. And to Lillie, we look forward to the day when you will be a strong voice for animals!
