Death by Discrimination: Justice for Oliver!

pic-of-OliverTwo cat rescue groups, Community Cats Coalition and Alley Cats Allies, advocated vehemently to save a community cat named Oliver, who Worcester County Animal Control assumed prejudicially and without evidence to be infected with rabies. People united in their effort to save Oliver’s life offered to quarantine him to determine if he actually presented signs of the disease, but their offer was rejected, and tragically he was killed on July 13.

According to Community Cats Coalition Director Susan Coleman, Oliver never came in contact with a rabies infected cat, which was the excuse used to kill him. An opossum and a raccoon who lived in the area were also trapped and killed by Worcester County Animal Control, only to find they were not infected either.

Susan Coleman was denied her right to present her side of the story before the Council of County Commissioners. During the meeting, Chief of Animal Control Susan Rantz said, ā€œIā€™d like to see a law made for them (feral cats) not to be allowed here.ā€ Coleman was silenced, knowing full well that she spent $57,000 and toiled for years to humanely manage the cat population in her community.
