In Defense of Animals Rescues Dogs from Horrific Conditions

Grenada, Miss. (October 6, 2014) – In Defense of Animals (IDA), the international animal protection organization that operates Hope Animal Sanctuary (HAS) in Grenada, Mississippi, responded to a plea for help last week with more than a dozen animals in a Tallahatchie County hoarding case after authorities responded to the death of the animals’ guardian.

On Wednesday, October 1, the rescue team from HAS joined authorities in responding to horrendous circumstances. The residence, located in Tallahatchie County, was completely dilapidated and crumbling, filled with trash and animal feces and urine. A scene so horrific that it’s hard to believe there was anything alive inside. The resident had died inside, leaving 15 dogs without a caregiver. Two dogs had already died and HAS removed the remaining 13 dogs, alive, but in very poor condition.

“The sheriff’s department arrived before we did and were forced to cut a path to allow access to the house. Every room was piled from floor to ceiling with trash, papers, and boxes – the floor had rotted and was caving in as we walked. As we entered the residence we could hear the sound of dogs barking from further inside the house and the smell was truly indescribable,” said Sharon Stone, HAS operations manager.

“We were warned by law enforcement that this would likely be the worst hoarding case we’d seen. For us, every hoarding case is the worst – the worst of suffering for the hoarder and the animals trapped in their delusional world. With each hoarding case we expose, it’s our hope that it will serve to help society and officials spot the symptoms and recognize the need for intervention for the people suffering from this disorder and the animals forced to try to survive in these situations,” said Doll Stanley, HAS director. The rescued dogs are receiving veterinary care and recovering well from their ordeal.
