Describing the Terror of Moran Market

Describing the Terror of Moran Market

The following is an excerpt from the journal of Dr. Marilyn Kroplick, President of In Defense of Animals, written during a recent fact-finding trip to the dog meat markets of South Korea.

Deeply personal, we share these words in the hopes that you will feel what she feels, and pledge to help end the dog and cat meat industry.

“DAY ONE: Moran Market. One of the most notorious places for confining, slaughtering and selling the body parts of dogs. I am attending a protest alongside one of IDA’s in-country partner organizations.

There are so many dogs. I reach out to them, to provide some comfort. Their eyes as wide as saucers … hundreds of hopeless canines, puppies and adults, all trapped behind bars.

Not one of the dogs isn’t wounded, psychologically or otherwise, in four or five ways. I know I shouldn’t, but I name them. It seems like the least I can do.

Little Bear, with the broken leg. Grace, waiting to be thrown ALIVE into a vat of boiling water. (My God I couldn’t stop them!) Clyde, with one eye. And Chile, who chews on the bars day and night.

Someone gestures for me to avert my eyes. An explosion of dogs is barking. A dog meat worker, dressed in a long blue rubber apron, plucks a single dog out of a densely packed cage.

Unlucky rope around his neck, the dog stalls. He is dragged away all the same.

Hours later the putrid smell of the market persists. Attempts to neutralize it by drinking a quart of grapefruit juice have no effect.

The taste, the scent, the memory, the hollow feeling … lingers.

That blue apron. The single dog – the life he could have, should have, lived.”

This pivotal trip is already yielding new alliances with the people of South Korea who support banning the dog and cat meat industry. New strategies are forming to expose the industry and to expand the campaign and help other dogs and cats suffering across all of Asia.

But we can’t do it without you. Please stand with us now.

Your donation of ANY amount today will be a massive help towards our ‘End Dog and Cat Meat’ Campaign as it makes greater inroads in South Korea to help the dogs and cats who suffer so heartbreakingly there.

Please be as generous as you can. Help make dog and cat meat history.

Thank you in advance for whatever you can give.
