Einstein: Gravitational Waves & Vegetarianism!

A few weeks ago, news broke as to one of the biggest science stories of the twentieth century. Gravitational waves, something Einstein had predicted in 1916, exactly 100 years ago, have finally been detected. They will provide scientists with a new tool to explore the universe. The news is a welcome opportunity to introduce the up and coming generation of nature and science lovers to the genius, and compassion, of Einstein.

We figured we’d take this opportunity, then, to remind the general public of another thing Einstein was right about. Einstein was a vegetarian, and wrote compassionately about animals on a number of occasions. “Besides agreeing with the aims of vegetarianism for aesthetic and moral reasons,” he has written, “it is my view that a vegetarian manner of living by its purely physical effect on the human temperament would most beneficially influence the lot of mankind.”

Truly, here was a man whose insights into ethics and morality were as profound as his insights into the workings of the physical world. Would that we all would be smart enough to appreciate the wisdom of his words.
