End Australia’s Feral Cat Massacre

End Australia’s Feral Cat Massacre

Oppose the government’s killing initiative and support humane alternatives

The Australian government has announced its plans to systematically kill 2 million feral cats by the year 2020. This heartless decision came in response to the country’s supposed increasing feral cat population and its decreasing native species populations. Australia’s killing campaign, lead by Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt, mistakenly blames feral cats (not humans-the primary cause) for other mammal and bird population declines, and has chosen to massacre millions of feral cats as a “solution” to this problem.

Abandoned by European settlers who first introduced them to the continent throughout the 17th and 19th centuries, early domestic cats were forced into the wild, where they slowly evolved into the large feral cats of today. After humans so carelessly abandoned them, Australian feral cats should not be blamed for simply striving to survive.

The Australian government plans to kill feral cats through the use of lethal poisons, baiting and trapping, shooting, and using tracker dogs. Feral cats suffer greatly from distress and painful facial and body wounds when caught inside traps and cages, which restrict movement. Australia’s newly developed poisonous bait, distastefully named “Curiosity” kills feral cats by stopping their internal flow of oxygen, a horrific death.
