End Elephant Performances in New Jersey!

New Jersey Senator Raymond J. Lesniak introduced “Nosey’s Law,” Bill S2508,  in September. If passed, it will ensure that, “… no person shall use an elephant in a traveling animal act” in the State of New Jersey. It may come up for a vote in the New Jersey Senate as soon as October 20, 2016, so the elephants need your help now!

The bill is inspired by the tragic life of Nosey, also sometimes called Tiny or Peanut. This crippled elephant continues to be dragged around the country, forced to give rides and perform circus-style behaviors. Her price for this “entertainment” has been to endure cruelty and torture with bullhooks, starvation, electric prods, being chained so tightly that she could not lay down or move more than a few feet, and according to a 2004 USDA report, she was beaten, in the dark, with shovel handles and sledgehammers.

Nosey’s abusive “owner,” Hugo Liebel, has been cited for over 200 Animal Welfare Act violations.Despite this, the U.S. Department of Agriculture continues to renew Liebel’s operating license. The USDA has consistently failed to protect Nosey and remove her from the torment of Hugo Liebel.

New Jersey’s Senator Lesniak and Nosey’s friends across the country have seen enough exploitation of Nosey and other elephants used and abused for entertainment. “Nosey’s Law” says no more to Hugo Liebel and the other exploitive businesses that pass through town lying to children and profiting off the torment of sensitive, intelligent animals. This legislation will force abusers like Hugo Liebel out of the state, and ultimately, out of business.

Please help end elephant performances in New Jersey for good by signing Senator Lesniak’s  petition in support of S2508. Senator Lesniak is asking for nationwide participation as the first step in passing this important legislation to protect elephants. If you are a New Jersey resident we will be sending out an alert specifically for you to contact your legislators to encourage their support of this bill. Please make sure we have your address in our system, not just your email, if you want to get alerts about this bill, and other legislation in New Jersey.
