Mice, Rats, and Squirrels

Often, people do not mind coming into contact with these creatures outside, and enjoy knowing that they share an environment with such animals. When squirrels feed from bird feeders or mice and rats live inside a home, however, many consider them pests.

Poison has often been used to kill these animals, as have a variety of traps. Here are some humane methods to control their behavior.

  • Buy bird feeders that prevent squirrels from accessing the seeds inside. These "squirrel-proof" feeders are available commercially.

  • Secure attic entrances and cap the chimney to prevent squirrels from taking up residence in these areas.

  • Keep all food sources in containers to avoid attracting mice and rats. Seal all cracks and other possible entrances to your home.

  • Buy live traps to catch mice and rats. Release them in a remote place.
