FBI Now Tracks Animal Abuse

FBI Now Tracks Animal Abuse

Good news is sweeping the nation. While those of us on the front lines see the horrors of animal cruelty almost daily, we can take heart that the media covers animal cruelty instances without distinction from other appalling crimes and recognizes that the public supports toughening and enforcing laws. Now, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) is tracking and scrutinizing the perpetrators of these abhorrent crimes. Profiling has long been a tool in criminal investigation, especially in serial rapes and murders. The most cunning, cold hearted, and calculating criminal often leaves a signature somewhere, that when recognized, can lead to their arrest and prosecution.

The premise that violent criminals first feed their lust for the suffering of others by tormenting and torturing animals has been substantiated. Studies conducted by criminal investigators and psychiatric interests alike support this fact. It’s to our society’s detriment that it has taken until now to establish a federal registry of these crimes and their perpetrators, but it is progress. Between this and the first registry of convicted animal abusers enacted by the state of Tennessee, we can be encouraged to push for tougher local and state laws. It’s high time. IDA’s Justice for Animal Coalition will capitalize on these and other recent advances in the protection of our fellow beings when we make our various cases for better laws to punish and deter animal abuse.
