Half of Earth for Wildlife?

Half of Earth for Wildlife?

Several scientific studies now show that we’re in the midst of the Earth’s sixth mass extinction, which is the rapid destruction of species that evolutionary biologist E.O. Wilson has called the coming “biological holocaust.” What or who is to blame for this pending doom? This shouldn’t be a surprise – humans.

So how do we combat this mass extinction? E.O. Wilson along with several others have a thought. The solution? Section off half of Earth to be dedicated entirely for wildlife preservation. “It’s been in my mind for years,” Wilson has said, “that people haven’t been thinking big enough—even conservationists. Half Earth is the goal, but it’s how we get there, and whether we can come up with a system of wild landscapes we can hang onto. I see a chain of uninterrupted corridors forming, with twists and turns, some of them opening up to become wide enough to accommodate national biodiversity parks, a new kind of park that won’t let species vanish.”

We agree with this as well as stabilizing population growth, and encouraging veganism, both of which will free up land for the millions of other species we should be sharing the planet with.

A lot of big ideas require an enormous amount of participation in order to see such ideas come to life. We hope that enough people can get on board with this idea or similar ideas, to give all of Earth’s species a surviving chance!
