Halloween Safety

Protect Your Cats This Halloween!

Halloween is this week, and while a fun holiday for many people, it is a dangerous time for animals, especially cats, and most especially for black cats. For most people, Halloween is about decorating, dressing in costume, and attending parties, or going trick-or-treating with kids. However, there is a small minority of genuinely evil people obsessed with practicing or experimenting with animal sacrifice.

No loving guardian would want this to happen to their companion animal, and while generally unlikely, it does happen. For this reason, and so that irresponsible people don’t “adopt” black cats as Halloween props, only to be dumped later, many shelters take the safety of their resident animals seriously enough to not allow black cats to be adopted within two weeks of Halloween.

So, if you operate a rescue, please don’t adopt out black cats before Halloween, and be especially vigilant about any animal adoptions near this time of year. If you’re the guardian of cats who are allowed to go outside, please consider the dangers they face being outdoors, but most especially at this time of year and commit yourself to making the arrangements necessary to keep them inside at least until Halloween is over. If you manage feral cat colonies, be especially vigilant about your traps and suspicious people in the vicinity of your colonies.

Thanks for caring, and have a safe and happy Halloween.
