Woodland Park Zoo’s Two Elephants Stranded in San Diego Zoo!

With Jane Goodall’s Voice for Chai and Bamboo, the Fight for Sanctuary Continues Nationwide

On April 16, the already-beleaguered elephants, Bamboo and Chai, were loaded like product cargo into steel shipping containers at Woodland Park Zoo (WPZ) in Seattle. Unfortunately, they were not headed for the comfort and refuge of a sanctuary, but for even colder winters, tornadoes, and a hard-rock amphitheater 600 feet away in an unsuitable zoo existence at Oklahoma City Zoo.

WPZ moved the elephants just hours after an injunction to prevent the zoo-to-zoo transfer was denied. But even with an arduous 2000-mile trek to come, in their haste, WPZ did not adequately check the hazardous weather conditions in their path. On April 15th, the day they left, the forecast was for “heavy snow across portions of Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah” and storms along the planned route were widely predicted. Once again, Bamboo and Chai had to suffer for the zoo’s mistake and were rerouted to the San Diego Zoo. Reportedly, Bamboo was suffering from colic; even attempting to lay down in her shipping crate mid-route.

The elephants are currently being held at the San Diego Zoo, in what appear to be prison-like holding cells.
