Help Elephants Sophie and Babe at Niabi Zoo

June 13th, 2013 by Nicole Meyer

Sophie and Babe Need Your Help

After more than a decade of living in the grossly antiquated exhibit at the Niabi Zoo in Coal Valley, Illinois, Sophie and Babe might finally have a chance for a better future.

Rock Island County officials recently hired zoo expert Alan Roocroft to review the zoo’s elephant program and make recommendations for the elephants’ future. Fortunately for Babe and Sophie—former Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus performers—Mr. Roocroft recommended that the elephants be sent to a facility in a warmer climate that offers space for exercise and veterinary care for their existing and anticipated health problems.

A final decision on Sophie and Babe’s future will be made by the Rock Island County Forest Preserve Commission, which has authority over the Niabi Zoo.

The Commission will hold a public meeting on June 17th to further discuss Mr. Roocroft’s report—and they need to hear from you. Click here to help Sophie and Babe have a better life.

Thank you for helping bring awareness to the plight of Sophie and Babe.
The meeting went as well as any I have ever witnessed in similar situations.
The only question left unanswered is WHERE they should go.
Please tell Niabi Zoo that NO zoo in this country can meet the criteria these two amazing elephants MUST have to survive.
They need sanctuary…nothing less will do.
