Help Save Horses from Slaughter

In response to public outrage, Congress is finally taking greater measures to safeguard horses from ending up in slaughterhouses. U.S. Sens. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), and Reps. Patrick Meehan (R-Pa.) and Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), recently introduced the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act. The Act would ban horse slaughter in the U.S., as well as banning the export of horses to other countries to be slaughtered for human consumption. It is estimated that more than 100,000 horses from the U.S. are shipped to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico each year.

Time is running out. In 2011, President Obama signed a bill stripped of language which had previously defunded inspections at horse slaughterhouses, which in turn opened the door once again to legal horse slaughter in the U.S. Now, some states are moving forward to establish slaughterhouses. Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it would review an application for inspecting horse slaughter at a facility in New Mexico. If the application is approved, the facility will be the first one in the U.S. to slaughter horses for human consumption since 2007. And in Oklahoma, legislators are currently considering two bills to legalize slaughterhouses, which would end a 50-year ban on slaughtering horses in Oklahoma.

Act now. Urge your legislators to support the SAFE Act today. It is important that your legislators hear from you directly, so they know that their constituents support the humane treatment of horses.
