In Defense Of Animals Offers $1,000 Reward In Cat Cruelty Case

Amigo nearly died after his feet and face were bound with duct tape

Los Angeles, Calif. (April 30, 2013) – In Defense of Animals (IDA), an international animal protection organization headquartered in San Rafael, Calif., has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whomever nearly killed a two year old cat by wrapping his feet and face in duct tape and leaving him in a cardboard box in the parking lot of a Los Angeles County animal shelter.

On the morning of Thursday, April 18, an employee with the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center discovered a cardboard box in the parking lot. Upon further inspection he found a cat inside. The cat, now named Amigo, had his front and back feet and face wrapped in red duct tape. Amigo was struggling to breathe and was rushed inside to remove the tape. He has since made a full recovery and has been transferred to another animal rescue organization for adoption.

“The cold-bloodedness of this crime indicates what a danger this person is to all of us,” said Eric Phelps, Emergency Response Unit Coordinator for IDA. “Someone knows who did this, and he or she will be serving the entire community by stepping forward.” Phelps added that FBI and other law enforcement agencies agree that a person who commits cruelty to animals “is probably just warming up,” a reference to studies showing that unpunished violence to animals usually leads to violence directed at people.

IDA urges anyone with information about this brutal attack to call IDA at 415-448-0078.
