San Rafael, California (September 7, 2016) – International animal protection organization, In Defense of Animals has launched a campaign calling on IHOP to offer cruelty-free versions of its world-famous breakfast meals.

“With a rapidly growing number of consumers choosing plant-based diets for ethical, environmental, and health reasons, it is an excellent time for IHOP to expand their menu to include vegan options and make strides for IHOP’s LiveWell and Green Initiatives,” reads the campaign petition.

A number of popular restaurant chains, including Starbucks and Chipotle, have recently responded to consumer needs by adding vegan menu selections with great success.

In Defense of Animals is calling for vegan breakfast swaps such as egg-free pancakes and plant-based meats, and emphasizing the positive impact plant-based menu additions would have on animals, the environment, and IHOP customers’ health.

A recent World Health Organization Report concluded that the consumption of processed meats, such as breakfast sausage and bacon, significantly increases the risk for colorectal cancer.  Additionally, the American Diabetic Association states that a healthy plant-based diet can help prevent high cholesterol and obesity which is linked to diabetes.

Beyond the health benefits, reducing consumption of animal products can also greatly benefit the environment. A UN Report released in 2010 states that a global shift towards a plant-based diet is necessary to significantly reduce our impact on the environment.

IHOP is currently in partnership with Kids LiveWell, in an initiative to provide healthier meal options for children and families. Additionally, the company has implemented a series of green initiatives in an effort to reduce its environmental impact.

“We know that IHOP prides itself on environmental responsibility, and we commend its series of green initiatives,” said Dr. Marilyn Kroplick, President of In Defense of Animals. “Scientific consensus asserts that animal agriculture is the leading cause of environmental destruction. We are calling on IHOP to add healthful, plant-based options to its menu to demonstrate a real commitment to the planet, and open up the breakfast chain to millions of customers who factor health, environment and animals into their meal choices. Sign and share our petition now to let IHOP know you want plant-based pancakes!”
