Addressing Human Injustice in the Animal Rights Community (Thursday, October 15)

What types of human injustices exist within the animal rights community? Some activists would say the movement is more damaged by its own internal bigotries than by any outside threat. Let’s examine racism, sexism, and other -isms; explore their impact both on people who experience them and on the animal rights community; and discuss their connection to self- and community-care. In this free webinar, we will review these issues and suggest ways to create a just community for all activists involved.

Instructor Bio:

Laura Schleifer created the word ‘artivist’ to describe her vocation as an artist-activist. A pro-intersectional vegan writer, theater artist and educator, her work has spanned the globe, from the Middle East, where she performed for Palestinian and Iraqi children on a theater/circus tour, to China, where she taught literature, cinema, writing and drama to US-college bound Chinese students, to Nicaragua, where she taught English/drama, to performing her songs and monologues off-Broadway and arts mentoring NYC homeless and at-risk youth. Her original feature screenplay, The Feral Child, was a Sundance Screenwriters Lab finalist. Most recently, she has been teaching courses on Israel and Palestine and on Utopianism at Wesleyan University’s Green Street Arts Center, and is a contributing essayist with The Leftist Review. She is also currently working on a book that deals with the questionable ethics of ‘compassionate killing’ for Vegan Publishers called Killing Them With Kindness; The Immoral Morality of Benevolent Violence, which is an extension of her essay of the same name, published in the current issue of Project Intersect Magazine.
