Justice for Australian Greyhounds

A few months ago, the Australian greyhound industry was thrown into uproar after ABC’s Four Corners exposed the cruel practice of live baiting. This is the illegal, but surprisingly common practice where small animals are drug by line to be chased and mauled during greyhound training. Since the story along with its undercover footage from Australian animal rights groups first broke, an official investigation has been underway with 15 trainers and handlers banned from the “sport” so far, and seven have been charged additionally under state rules. In the most latest news, two more trainers, Douglas Wheeler and Kyle Smale, were also suspended, a sign that not only many more people knew about this awful abuse, but also that Australia is moving in the right direction.

Dr. John Kaye, Greens member of the NSW Parliament, has introduced a bill to ban greyhound racing, stating it is cruel and has no place in Australia. The common claim of the economic benefit of greyhound racing is grossly exaggerated, according to Dr. Kay. Hopefully, other politicians listen to him and see that this outdated “sport” is inhumane and archaic, and vote to ban the it from Australia. Not only will they be telling the world they don’t condone animal cruelty, but they will be saving countless lives in the process.
