Justice for Rehabilitated Birds Shot

Tragedy struck the Medicine River Wildlife Center in Alberta, Canada this past October when the crows and ravens in its care were heartlessly shot to death anonymously during the night. The center, which cares for close to 2000 injured or orphaned animals annually, has been devastated by the attack. The targeted large outdoor cage, which housed the birds, was far from the main road so the person or persons responsible methodically and maliciously sought the birds out to shoot them with a BB gun.

For a small rehabilitation facility, this sort of event is shattering. Not only has it broken the staff and volunteers’ hearts, but has violated a sacred understanding that when animals are in care, they are protected. The facility and its privacy were invaded, and its diligent work to treat and heal these birds was for naught.

Staff of the center stated that this is not the first time they have had intruders. Days before the killing of the birds, it was discovered that a fence had been tampered with and a fawn escaped the center. In addition, several other birds have seemed to escape around this time, leaving staff to believe that the shootings were a continuation from these previous events.
