Korean Independence Movement Day Dog Parades

In Defense of Animals hosted dog parades in front of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles and through Oakland’s Koreatown Northgate (KONO) neighborhood in celebration of Korean Independence Movement Day. This holiday marks the Korean uprising against Japan’s colonial rule and their fight for independence. This Independence Movement Day IDA asked Korean Americans to rise against South Korea’s brutal dog meat trade.  There is no excuse for dog abuse! [singlepic id=205 w=320 h=240 float=right]

Dogs in South Korea live tormented lives as victims of the dog meat trade, which kills two and a half million dogs each year. Dogs are electrocuted, hanged, have their throats slashed, and are often beaten to death. They are thrown into tubs of boiling water, then into rotating drums for the removal of their fur, and finally are blowtorched, sometimes while still fully conscious. The prevailing myth is that the more suffering endured during slaughter, the more tender the meat and more potent the alleged “medicinal properties.”

“Most Koreans are opposed to the egregiously cruel and illicit dog meat trade. This industry exists in a legal blind spot created by conflicting regulations,” says IDA spokesperson Christy Griffin. “We are asking Korean Americans to join with us to demand that the South Korean government ban this horrific industry for good by making it truly illegal.”
