Little Kit Was Saved!

Little Kit Was Saved!

At In Defense of Animals’ Hope Animal Sanctuary, saving animals is what we do 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and little Kit is the most recent shining example of a life saved by your generosity.

Late on a recent hot and humid Saturday evening, the call came in that a small puppy was stuck and whimpering helplessly in a culvert, in this case, an open drain running underneath a busy highway.

Sharon, our sanctuary operations manager, and her assistant Charles, leapt into action. Once they arrived on the scene, they met the caller and her son who had been waiting with the puppy for fear she would find her way out of the culvert and be run over on the adjacent busy highway.

In the darkness, Charles climbed into the far end of the culvert, slowly crawling closer and closer to sounds of the crying pup. Using sections of PVC pipe to make noise as he drew nearer, he gently encouraged the pup to move towards the other end of the culvert where Sharon was waiting. As the pup neared that end, Sharon climbed in and quickly grabbed her. The pup melted into her arms, snuggling close.

For the tiny three-pound pup, now named Kit, rescue came just in time. She was covered in fleas and mites. Once in our care, she was vaccinated, given flea prevention medication, treated for mites and given worming medication – and today is resting comfortably, recovering from her ordeal in a warm bed with a fluffy toy larger than she is.

In a few months, when she is old enough, Kit will be spayed and when she is ready, she will be adopted into a home where she will never be alone and in danger again.

Kit is safe now, but there are always puppies, kittens, and other animals in need of urgent rescue.

Your donation to In Defense of Animals will ensure that those pups, like Kit, will have full and happy lives..

Please be as generous as you can today so at IDA’s Hope Animal Sanctuary we can continue to do what we do – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
