Next April, In Defense of Animals is hosting a Vegan Spirituality Retreat at Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary in Gainesville, Florida.
This remarkable sanctuary not only fosters respect for primates, it cultivates compassion for all of Earth’s inhabitants. Sanctuary Founder and Director Kari Bagnall built the sanctuary on ethical principles and provides vegan living for all interns and volunteers during their stay.

Kari Bagnall is founder and Executive Director of Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary, a non-profit organization offering a safe haven for monkeys in need of permanent sanctuary care. Kari owned her own interior design business and was volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for abused and neglected children when a ‘pet’ monkey named Samantha was placed in her care in 1993. Soon after Samantha came into Kari’s life, more monkeys followed and Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary was born. Jungle Friends is home to nearly 300 New World monkeys and provides permanent, high-quality sanctuary care for abused or unwanted monkeys from around the United States who have been surrendered from the exotic pet trade, rescued from research, or confiscated by authorities.
