Millions of Animal Died in Laboratories Last Year

MILLIONS of animals were experimented on and killed in the United States last year, but scandalously, just 450,000 were recorded.

Mice, rats, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians make up 90-95% of the living, feeling individuals tested on in our nation’s laboratories.

They experience pain and suffering just like us, yet we don’t even bother to count them.

Animal experiments are a cruel waste of lives, time, and money. Please ensure your cosmetics and household products are truly cruelty-free and carry the leaping bunny logo.

Here’s the latest USDA APHIS report:

Here’s how to interpret it:

The USDA reports all animals used in USDA- APHIS regulated research who are members of a “protected” species. Most rodents, fish, amphibians, and birds are not reported.

While we’re fairly certain there is research going on that is under the radar, the facilities that are inspected, and those that receive federal funding are generally assumed to be reported and the figures are likely to be fairly accurate.

The Animal Welfare Act was signed into law in 1966. It is the only federal law in the United States that regulates the treatment of animals in research, exhibition, transport, and by dealers. Other laws, policies, and guidelines may include additional species coverage or specifications for animal care and use, but all refer to the Animal Welfare Act as the minimum acceptable standard.

The Act is enforced by USDA, APHIS, Animal Care
Animal Welfare Act and Regulations

The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) requires that minimum standards of care and treatment be provided for certain animals bred for commercial sale, used in research, transported commercially, or exhibited to the public.
