Montana, the Big Sky State, is Big on Fur Factory Farming

Montana’s state wildlife agency, the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) recently approved Larry and Carol Schultz’s application to move their North Dakota bobcat fur factory farm to Fergus County, Montana, bringing the number of fur factory farms in the state to more than 15. Mr. Schultz lamented that the noise and pollution from the oilfields near his North Dakota operation caused the mother bobcats to kill their young, thereby cutting into the profits of his large-scale factory farm where he keeps 130 bobcats imprisoned.

Even after receiving 21,185 letters against allowing the factory fur farm, with nearly 9,000 letters from IDA supporters, and just 20 in support of the planned fur factory farm, FWP still approved their application. In the end, it is all about profit, and wild animals mean big business for hunters, trappers, and for large-scale fur factory farmers. Montana is apparently content with being known as a fur factory farming state where wild animals are imprisoned in extreme discomfort and fear, deprived their most basic needs, and then brutally killed in ways that would be illegal if done to dogs or cats.
