Most people know Elaine Hendrix as an actor. You may also know that she was presented with IDA’s Guardian Celebrity Activist Award for her dedication to other species. Recognized for roles in The Parent Trap, What the Bleep Do We Know?!, Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion and Superstar, Elaine has also made appearances on TV series such as “The Mentalist,” “Criminal Minds,” “Castle,” “CSI,” and two years on the critically acclaimed CBS series “Joan of Arcadia.”

Elaine embodies the ethos of a guardian: to respect and honor the profound individuality of other species. A voice for animals in many ways, she has been a spokesperson for In Defense of Animals, a volunteer and host for the cable show “Pets 90210,” and an annual Honorary Committee Member of the Genesis Awards. She has spoken before city councils and regularly attends adoption events for various rescue organizations. It is the policy of In Defense of Animals to no longer use language that accepts the current concept of animals as property, commodities and/or things. Rather than refer to ourselves or others as "owners" of animals we share our lives with, we now refer to ourselves and others as "guardians" of our animal friends and to animals as "he" or "she" rather than "it."

"Animals have been regarded as property for way too long. It's high time we took on a more loving and responsible relationship with our kindred beings in the web of life on this beautiful planet. I always think and act as a guardian towards my kindred beings, never as their owner."
