Local Humane Society Delivers Hope to Katrina Animals in Time for Holiday Season
Four-Legged Hurricane Victims to Receive a Truckload of Food

Englewood, Colo.— In Defense of Animals (IDA) is pleased to announce the departure of a tractor trailer load of food from Englewood, Colo. bound for Gulfport, Mississippi to assist the animal shelters affected by Hurricane Katrina. The shipment of 22 pallets of food was graciously donated by the Colorado Humane Society and its members. When it was announced that a truckload of food was available, but there was no one able to transport it the 1,500 mile journey from Colorado to Mississippi, Marana, Arizona-based Airstone Enterprises stepped up to the plate, donating a truck, gas, and a driver.

When: Tuesday, December 6, Please call Colorado Humane Society for time
Where: Colorado Humane Society, 2760 South Platt River Dr.

The mission was facilitated by national animal protection organization IDA. IDA was among the first of the animal protection organizations on the ground after the storm hit. While many of the rescue organizations have pulled out of the storm ravaged areas, workers report that relief is still much needed. Animals who escaped during the storm are roaming the streets in search of sustenance. Rescuers spend time setting up food and water stations and luring in frightened animals who were friendly and loving prior to the storm. Disease and starvation is rampant.

“Few people recognize the state of disaster the Gulf States are still in, especially for animals,” said Eric Phelps, IDA spokesperson. “We are grateful to the Colorado Humane Society and Airstone Enterprises who are giving these animals, who have already been through so much, something they desperately need.”

IDA has established a Hurricane Katrina Animal Relief Fund to finance transportation, food for animals, and to provide veterinary care. IDA is accepting donations to support its efforts on its web site, www.IDAUSA.org, and by mail. Send checks to: Hurricane Relief, c/o In Defense of Animals, 131 Camino Alto, Mill Valley, CA 94941.
