In Defense of Animals Seizes Horses in Chickasaw Bust Chickasaw County, Mississippi—A young bull, three emaciated horses, and a burro were seized in Chickasaw County on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 by Doll Stanley of In Defense of Animals (IDA)’s Project Hope and the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Department. The “owner” of the three horses, burro, and bull was given a warning at the beginning of the October to immediately improve the animals’ care and living conditions. When the situation went unimproved, authorities were forced to seize the animals from their pasture on CR345, just outside of Houston, Mississippi. The animals’ guardian will have five business days to secure a bond for their care and seek a hearing on their custody. “This will be a horrible year for horses whose guardians don’t know how or don’t have the means to care for them,” said Stanley. “This summer’s drought has made hay scarce and more expensive. To make matters worse, the equine population has soared due to people thinking they can breed and make a profit. Instead, that mindset has only devalued the lives of these marvelous creatures and put them at risk of being purchased by individuals who have no idea of what it takes to care for a horse.” Stanley continued, “Our case load has tripled this year and we are most grateful to the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Department for their outstanding work to aid animals in distress. They are one of many law enforcement agencies that are setting a zero tolerance for the abuse of animals.” For more information on In Defense of Animals and Project Hope, please visit www.IDAUSA.org and www.project-hope.net. |
