Northwest IDA Workers Administer Urgently Needed Aid to Animals

Portland — Local animal advocates Matt Rossell, Leslie Hemstreet, and Connie Durkee of the international animal protection organization, In Defense of Animals (IDA), have returned to Portland after spending three weeks in New Orleans assisting with rescue efforts for animals affected by Hurricane Katrina. They brought back five dogs and three cats that they rescued from the affected areas who are all available for adoption at the Oregon Humane Society.

A photo opportunity with Matt, Leslie, and Connie and the rescued animals will be staged at the Oregon Humane Society, 1067 NE Columbia Blvd. on Wednesday, November 2, at 1:00 p.m.

“When I saw the images of animals stranded in areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina, I felt an overwhelming sense of need to help,” said Rossell. “IDA’s Project Hope has been on the ground since the day after the storm hit and while many families have lost their homes and all their possessions, they are eternally grateful for the care taken to reunite them with their animal companions. I’m so glad to be able to be a part of this effort.”

While many of the rescue organizations have pulled out of the storm ravaged areas, Rossell reports that relief is still much needed. In addition to the animals who are still trapped in homes, animals who escaped during the storm are roaming the streets in search of sustenance. Rescuers spend time setting up food and water stations and luring in frightened animals who were friendly and loving prior to the storm

IDA has established a Hurricane Katrina Animal Relief Fund to finance transportation, food for animals, and to provide veterinary care. IDA is accepting donations to support its efforts on its web site, www.IDAUSA.org, and by mail. Send checks to: Hurricane Relief, c/o In Defense of Animals, 131 Camino Alto, Mill Valley, CA 94941.
